Olexiy Shovkunenko

(1884 – 1974)
 Ukrainian painter-aquarellist, landscape and portrait artist and teacher.

National Artist of the USSR (1944). Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (from 1947).
Art education gained at the Odessa Art School (1908) and the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1917).

Outstanding achievements of Ukrainian art of the twentieth century associated with the name of Kherson resident Olexiy Shovkunenko. His works are kept in museums and private collections in Ukraine. Dozens of current Ukrainian titled artists of older generation proudly call themselves his disciples. Kherson Regional Art Museum by O. Shovkunenko has in its funds over one hundred and fifty works of this great master. The cause to collecting of works in the collection of  Shovkunenko Kherson Art Museum, in the early 1980s put many transfer and procurement from collection of the second artist’s wife, then already a widow, Alexandra Shovkunenko. Science museum staff was constantly in contact and friendly conversation with her. The result of their joint work was a collection that includes about 70 works by the artist. In 1981, the Art Museum was given the name of Olexiy Shovkunenko.

Today, a collection of Shovkunenko’s works increased in volume more than doubled, due to these acquisitions of the museum and gifts of Alexandra.

Olexiy Shovkunenko – author of numerous portraits of writers (Yuri Yanovsky, Pavlo Tychyna, Maksym Rylsky, Ivan Le, Leonid Pervomaisky), actors (Mary Volgemut-Litvinenko, Bela Rudenko), architects (E. Katonina, W. Zabolotny), sculptors (M. Lysenko, B. Yakovlev), Academician Bogomolets, General S. Kovpak and others.

In 1937 by a series of watercolors "Dniprobud" won a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition "Art and technology in modern life."

There are also known still lifes of Olexiy Shovkunenko.

Was buried in Baikove cemetery in Kyiv.
